What is a mosaic tile?
It’s decorative design with small pieces, usually under 2X2, and placed on a mesh backing for easier installation. They come in all sizes and shapes, including natural stone, glass, metal, pebbles, medallions, murals, as arabesque, brick, basketweave, hexagon, chevron, herringbone patterns.
They also come in various sizes: round, square, rectangular, diamond and more, so can be combined to make unique floors, backsplashes, bathroom walls, shower, and tub surrounds and fireplaces.
As for a flooring tile, they are strong and do not get slippery when wet. You do need to be sure you select one that is appropriate for floor application, so be clear with your retailer about the intended use.

What is Water jet Technology?
Chances are you’ll come across this phrase when selecting mosaics. It’s just a manufacturing procedure that uses supersonic water to crumble the material. The technology can cut virtually anything and is used to create patterns.

Types of Mosaic Tile
Here’s a quick guide on some of the things you’ll see (and expect to see more) when you walk into a flooring store:
- Stone. Do you dream of Roman or Greek floors with beautiful floral motifs or geometrics? You can take it a lot further by using Waterjet Technologies to design an even more sophisticated pattern. Stone can also be etched or hand-painted.
- Glass.They are transparent, translucent or opaque and mirrored to bounce around light, create shadows and add shimmer and shine.
- Medallions. This wasn’t possible before the days of Waterjet Technology, because they include large cut pieces, curves and more.

Some people refer to all tiles as ceramic, but ceramic and porcelain are quite different.

Porcelain versus ceramic tile
This large-format is a typeof ceramic, but it’s heavier and denser. Like ceramic, it is made up of clay but, unlike it, it also includes sand, glass and is fired at higher temperatures.
Because of this, it is thicker than ceramic, more durable and completely waterproof whether or not it’s glazed. Ceramic is only waterproof when glazed.

Great for stone tiles

Other benefits of porcelain
- Durability. It is so thick, strong and unfazed by water it is perfect for flooring in highly trafficked areas, such as kitchens, baths, hallways, mudrooms, laundry areas, patios and decks and more. Any retailer will explain that it is often the preferred choice for commercial facilities such as offices.
- Style. This has the cache of fine china or Italian Porcelana. There are many design options and it can be made to look like almost anything. When you walk into the flooring store, you’ll see many patterns, including basket weaves to florals, as well as textures such as wood, leather, steel or bamboo.
- Easy maintenance. Since this tile is already so non-porous, it resists bacteria and odors. It also doesn’t require the sealing that some other tiles do. Stains come right off just by spot cleaning. Keep in mind, however, that grout is porous and should be sealed.
- Through-body. The color goes all the way through the tile, so chips are less noticeable; you won’t see any white spots!
